Cheloniidae eh a familia da ordem das tartarugas que inclui as tartarugas marinhas. O grupo eh constituido por seis generos e sete especies, todas elas ameacadas de extincao.As tartarugas marinhas habitam todos os oceanos, excepto o Oceano Antartico, em zonas de agua tropical e subtropical. A maioria das especies sao migratorias e vagueiam pelos oceanos, orientando-se com a ajuda do campo magnetico terrestre. A tartaruga de couro eh a maior especie, atingindo 2 metros de comprimento e 1,5 metro de largura, para 600 kg de peso./Sea turtles (Superfamily Chelonioidea) are turtles found in all the world's oceans except the Arctic Ocean. There are seven living species of sea turtles: flatback, green, hawksbill, Kemp's Ridley, leatherback, loggerhead and olive ridley. The East Pacific subpopulation of the green turtle has been classified as a separate species in the past as the black turtle. However, DNA evidence indicates that it is not evolutionarily distinct from the green turtle.All but the leatherback are in the family Cheloniidae; the leatherback belongs to the family Dermochelyidae and is its only member.
